District 113 Board of Education Appoints FOCUS on the Arts Director; Looks Forward to Spring 2023 Event |La Junta de Educación del Distrito 113 Nombra a la Directora del Festival “Focus on the Arts” y Espera con Gran Expectativa el Evento de Primavera

Highland Park, IL – September 6, 2022 - At the September 6 Special Board meeting, the Township High School District 113 Board of Education appointed Tamara Jenkins to serve as the FOCUS on the Arts Director.  

“We are so pleased to announce Tamara’s appointment,” said Superintendent Dr. Bruce Law. “She has a wealth of experience in the arts both as a professional artist as well as a producer and director managing large-scale events and productions. In addition, she has extensive experience in pre-professional training for students wishing to pursue the arts in college and as a career, which means all of our students will benefit from Tamara’s expertise. She is well-prepared to run a beloved event like FOCUS, including expanding it for the first time to include Deerfield High School. As the Board has said, the Board expects a robust FOCUS for many years to come that is fully inclusive of all students, and in conjunction with fundraising and grant writing, the Board expects to provide financial support for it.” 

“I am thrilled to be back in District 113 at this pivotal time to serve as the FOCUS on the Arts Director,” said Tamara Jenkins. “We are so lucky in District 113 that our students, families and community are avid supporters of the arts, with many choosing to pursue the arts in a professional capacity. There is so much opportunity in the arts for students who wish to pursue that path. For the students who have other career goals, becoming an avid admirer of the arts is just as important in creating well-rounded human beings.  The arts provide an avenue for expression, healing, connection and provoke thought and discussion. That is vital in our community right now. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to make FOCUS spring 2023 a success.” 

Ms. Jenkins has over 30 years of experience as a professional actor in New York City. Most recently, she founded The Harbor Lights Theater Company, a 501(c)(3), in the borough of Staten Island, where she served for eight years as the Executive Artistic Director, Lead Producer, and Director of the Company's education program. During those eight seasons, she produced 29 productions starring over 100 Broadway veterans, including Tony, Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Obie Award winners and nominees. 

For the pre-professional training program, she developed all curriculum, hired teachers, recruited, auditioned and selected students. She also produced a two-week summer intensive and year-long program in musical theater that boasted a 100 percent acceptance rate for students into theater programs at New York University, the Manhattan School of Music, the Boston Conservatory, and Boston University among others. 

Ms. Jenkins has earned numerous awards and is a member of the Actors Equity Association, Theater Communications Group, SAG-AFTRA, Dramatists Guild NY, Alliance of Resident Theaters, NY. She studied in the School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance to earn a Bachelor of Music/Musical Theater magna cum laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a true representative of District 113 as she is a proud graduate of Deerfield High School and proud mom of a Highland Park High School student.
