SLOPPY COURSE BUT FAST RUNNING AT CSL SOUTH QUAD #2, DEERFIELD VARSITY WINS TWO OF THREE, SOPHOMORES DOMINATE

It’s a new era for Deerfield as they made their debut in the Central Suburban League South on Tuesday. After decades in the CSL North with much success, the Warriors now compete against the much larger and much faster CSL South schools.

Glenbrook North hosted CSL South Quad #2 with Deerfield, Glenbrook South, and Maine South attending. It had rained all day and stopped just before the races, but the course was still wet and sloppy. However, that didn’t dampen the exciting races.

In the varsity race, the junior trio of Ben Freedman, Danny Kriegel, and Nick Dowell, packed up closely towards the front. A big group of mostly Maine South runners caught them on the second mile, but a strong finish by Freedman earned him a fifth place finish in 16:39, which is just nine seconds off his PR despite the course conditions. Kriegel was next in sixth place in a PR of 16:47. Andrew Firestone, who was not part of the pack initially, reeled them in to finish in ninth place, and Dowell finished in 11th.  Sam Rush had his best race of the season in a huge PR of 17:27. Zach Lieberman and Jonathan Heid ran big PRs in 20:21 and 21:32, respectively. At the end of the day, Deerfield narrowly beat Maine South by one point, beat Glenbrook North by a wider margin, and lost to Glenbrook South—a great start to the CSL South era.

The sophomores got their CSL South careers off to a booming start. Almost immediately, Deerfield held the first four spots. Scott Harvey won the race wire-to-wire in a solo 16:33. Sam Chaban ran in third place for most of the race until he caught and passed teammate Hugo Albrecht-Buehler for the 2-3 finish. Both Chaban and Albrecht-Buehler broke the 17-minute barrier for the first time. Will Lambert was running with Chaban for most of the race but had a rough second half and fell off, still finishing fourth. Charlie Marks was in a battle with Maine South’s #1 runner for the fifth position for the first half of the race, but Marks put a whopping 26-second gap on him in the second half. That solidified the 1-2-3-4-5 finish for the Warriors, earning three wins with a perfect scores of 15 points. Beyond sweeping the first five spots, even seventh place was a Warrior as Jay Noren ran his best race of the season for a 18:12 PR. And if that weren’t enough, Aurin Dasgupta, Reed Galasinski, and Reid Gandy all set gigantic new PRs by over a minute. Deerfield really couldn’t have asked for more from this race.

In the freshman race, Deerfield earned a win over Glenbrook North but lost to Glenbrook South and Maine South. Andrew Calderon and Logan Luo worked together nicely again for a 5-6 finish and new two-mile PRs. Eli Duncan kept those two in his sights and ran his best race of the season for 14th place and broke the 12-minute barrier for the first time. Behind him seven other Warrior freshmen set new PRs including Lucas Bryan with a 33-second improvement and Eliot Naylor by 48 seconds.
