Increased police presence on 9/28 at HPHS out of an abundance of caution

Dear Highland Park High School Community, 

Today, a teacher in a class overheard students discussing a concerning text that indicated that there was going to be a shooting at Highland Park High School. The students received the text from an unknown phone number. That teacher immediately contacted the deans and our school resource officer (SRO), an armed officer with the Highland Park Police Department. 

Law enforcement began investigating the matter, and simultaneously brought in additional armed officers in and around the building out of an abundance of caution. The weapons detection system was also redeployed at the entrances that were open. The police will remain on campus and will provide an additional presence at Wolters Field. 

Law enforcement continues to investigate the matter. Law enforcement ensures us that there is an adequate police presence to continue normal operations. Dismissal went as planned and after school activities and athletics will also continue as scheduled. 

Please remind your students to come forward to report a concern when they become aware of it. If it is an emergency, please call 911. 

As Board President Dan Struck and Superintendent Dr. Bruce Law said in their joint email on Tuesday, any concern or threat will be acted upon until or unless law enforcement determines otherwise.

Estimada comunidad de la escuela secundaria Highland Park:

Hoy, un maestro en una clase escuchó a los estudiantes discutir un texto preocupante que indicaba que iba a haber un tiroteo en la escuela secundaria Highland Park. Los estudiantes recibieron el mensaje de texto de un número de teléfono desconocido. Ese maestro se comunicó inmediatamente con los decanos y con nuestro oficial de recursos escolares (SRO), un oficial armado del Departamento de Policía de Highland Park.

Las fuerzas del orden comenzaron a investigar el asunto y, simultáneamente, trajeron agentes armados adicionales dentro y alrededor del edificio por precaución. También se reubicó el sistema de detección de armas en las entradas que estaban abiertas. La policía permanecerá en el campus y brindará presencia adicional en Wolters Field.

Las autoridades continúan investigando el asunto. Las fuerzas del orden nos garantizan que haya una presencia policial adecuada para continuar con las operaciones normales. La salida se realizó según lo planeado y las actividades extraescolares y los deportes también continuarán según lo programado.

Recuerde a sus estudiantes que se presenten para informar una inquietud cuando se den cuenta. Si se trata de una emergencia, llame al 911.

Como dijeron el presidente de la junta, Dan Struck, y el superintendente, Dr. Bruce Law, en su correo electrónico conjunto el martes, se actuará sobre cualquier inquietud o amenaza hasta que las autoridades determinen lo contrario.
