SENIOR ENGLISH: FIRST QUARTER GRADE GUIDE
Personal Essays: Your work in the personal essay unit represents 25% of your quarter grade. The practice writing will be evaluated on the effort and energy put into it. The mastery writing (the final essay) will be evaluated on its quality.
Process Assignments: You will receive a letter grade for each of the process assignments based on completion and effort. All process assignments should be brought in paper form to class and emailed to your teacher. If an assignment is late or not emailed in, you will lose one third of a letter grade for each day it is not turned in or emailed (up to one full letter grade for each issue- that’s two letter grades). Extensions will only be granted two or more days before the due date.

Essay From A College Application Question
Mastery Assignment: You will receive an evaluation and letter grade for your final polished essay. This essay will be worth as much as the three practice essays combined. The same late and email rules apply.
Reading: Your work in reading represents 20% of your quarter grade. You will have several reading responses to complete as homework. These will be evaluated as practice assignments in the same manner as the practice essays in the personal essay unit. Like those essays, they should be emailed to your teacher and brought to class in paper form. If any of these is late or not emailed in, you will lose one third of a letter grade for each day it is not turned in or emailed (up to one full letter grade for each issue- that’s two letter grades). Extensions will only be granted two or more days before the due date.
For several other stories and a set of articles, you are expected to read and annotate but not to produce a reading response. We will have in class writing based on these reading assignments. Consider these quizzes and they will be worth half of an outside of class reading response. If, when you get to class, you have not done the reading, you will receive a zero for the day (see participation) and may create a reading response based on the in class activities for partial credit.
Reading Grade:
Reading Responses 50%
In Class Reading Activities 35%
Outside Reading 15%
Participation: Your participation in class represents 15% of your quarter grade. Class participation is simple: You will earn a participation point for each day you actively participate in class. If you are unprepared for class or absent, you will not receive a participation point for that day. You may make up missed class periods by doing the activities that you missed. Information about each class period is in the class binder. Classes must be made up no later than within three days of your return to class.
Interpreter of Maladies Paper and Process: The paper at the end of the quarter represents 40% of your quarter grade. Like the personal essay unit, the steps leading up to the paper will be 50% of this part of the grade and the final paper will be 50%. You will receive a letter grade for each of the small process assignments based on completion and effort. All process assignments should be brought in paper form to class and emailed in as well. Due to the nature of this assignment, late process work will cause significant problems (you will see why when we get to this). If a process piece is late or incomplete (not enough copies are brought or the copies do not follow the guidelines), the work will receive a one grade penalty. For this assignment, paper copies are critically important. As usual, if the process assignment is not emailed in (but is brought to class in paper form), you will lose one third of a letter grade for each day it is not emailed (up to one full letter grade for each issue). For process assignments for this paper, no extensions can be granted.
The final paper will be worth 50% of your grade for this area. You will receive an evaluation and letter grade for your final paper assignment. A more detailed evaluation rubric will be provided for this paper. The standard late and email rules apply.
