Today’s events at HPHS

Dear District 113 Community,

We prepare and practice our security procedures for events like the one that occurred at Highland Park High School today, even though we always hope that we will never need to use them. We are all in this together, and we are grateful to our students, families, and staff who did exactly what we asked them to do. We are also so grateful to our law enforcement partners who responded so quickly and thoroughly. I cannot overstate the importance of their quick action or our gratitude to them for their help today. I cannot commend everyone enough. 

A student used our tip line to report a concern, which led to an immediate call to the police and an equally immediate investigation into the matter by HPHS personnel. Then, additional students came forward to report a similar concern, which then led to an immediate investigation by law enforcement already on the scene. When police advised going into lockdown to facilitate their investigation, our faculty and staff sprang into action to assist students. Students remained calm. Parents and guardians, understandably anxious for the all-clear, waited patiently for a safe resolution. 

When these events occur we review our practices and procedures. There are always ways to improve and things to learn. We will do so again following this case.

Safety is our number one priority, and once again, it was because students who had critical information shared that information with school staff that the school and police were able to respond so quickly to the situation. I know we say this all the time, but please take a moment to tell your student to say something if they see or hear something that concerns them. Tell them that the quick response today was because of students who shared with staff the information they had. If you or your student is concerned about a weapon or immediate harm, please call 911. 

One final thing. As educators and parents, we rightly worry about students, both for their safety and for the stress they must feel every day. I am also worried about you, our parents. I hope that while you are caring for your students and helping them when they are feeling scared or anxious that you take care of yourselves. As a society, we should drop everything and figure out a solution to this problem. Until we as a country figure out how to remove this scourge that is upon all of us, we need to take care of each other–and ourselves.

Tomorrow will be a regular day of school at Highland Park High School and at Deerfield High School, and counselors will be available to students who need them. If you have questions specific to either school, please reach out to the schools directly.

Preparamos y practicamos nuestros procedimientos de seguridad para eventos como el que ocurrió hoy en la Escuela Secundaria Highland Park, aunque siempre esperamos no tener que usarlos nunca. Todos estamos juntos en esto y estamos agradecidos con nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal que hicieron exactamente lo que les pedimos que hicieran. También estamos muy agradecidos con nuestros socios encargados de hacer cumplir la ley que respondieron tan rápida y minuciosamente. No puedo exagerar la importancia de su acción rápida o nuestra gratitud por su ayuda hoy. No puedo felicitar a todos lo suficiente.

Un estudiante usó nuestra línea de información para informar una inquietud, lo que condujo a una llamada inmediata a la policía y una investigación igualmente inmediata sobre el asunto por parte del personal de HPHS. Luego, estudiantes adicionales se presentaron para informar una preocupación similar, lo que llevó a una investigación inmediata por parte de las fuerzas del orden público que ya estaban en el lugar. Cuando la policía aconsejó entrar en confinamiento para facilitar su investigación, nuestra facultad y personal se pusieron en acción para ayudar a los estudiantes. Los estudiantes mantuvieron la calma. Los padres y tutores, comprensiblemente ansiosos por que todo estuviera despejado, esperaron pacientemente una resolución segura.

Cuando ocurren estos eventos, revisamos nuestras prácticas y procedimientos. Siempre hay maneras de mejorar y cosas que aprender. Lo haremos nuevamente después de este caso.

La seguridad es nuestra prioridad número uno, y una vez más, fue porque los estudiantes que tenían información crítica la compartieron con el personal de la escuela que la escuela y la policía pudieron responder tan rápidamente a la situación. Sé que decimos esto todo el tiempo, pero tómese un momento para decirle a su estudiante que diga algo si ve o escucha algo que le preocupa. Dígales que la respuesta rápida de hoy se debió a que los estudiantes compartieron con el personal la información que tenían. Si usted o su estudiante están preocupados por un arma o daño inmediato, llame al 911.

Una última cosa. Como educadores y padres, con razón nos preocupamos por los alumnos, tanto por su seguridad como por el estrés que deben sentir cada día. También estoy preocupado por ustedes, nuestros padres. Espero que mientras cuidan a sus estudiantes y los ayudan cuando se sienten asustados o ansiosos, se cuiden a sí mismos. Como sociedad, deberíamos dejar todo y encontrar una solución a este problema. Hasta que nosotros, como país, descubramos cómo eliminar este flagelo que está sobre todos nosotros, debemos cuidarnos unos a otros y a nosotros mismos.

Mañana será un día regular de clases en la Escuela Secundaria Highland Park y en la Escuela Secundaria Deerfield, y los consejeros estarán disponibles para los estudiantes que los necesiten. Si tiene preguntas específicas sobre cualquiera de las escuelas, comuníquese directamente con las escuelas.
