Highland Park, IL – June 21, 2022 - At the June 21 Special Board meeting, the Township High School District 113 Board of Education appointed Jody Elliott-Schrimmer to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Gayle Byck in May. Ms. Elliott-Schrimmer will serve the remainder of Ms. Byck’s term, which expires in April 2023.
“After announcing the vacancy, the Board actively sought applicants during an 11-day window,” said Board President Ken Fishbain. “In reviewing the submissions, Jody emerged as the candidate who has so much to offer this Board and District 113. She has an incredible depth and breadth of experience in education, a proven track record of leadership in so many education and community organizations, and she has demonstrated through action a deep commitment to equity and inclusion.”
“I am delighted to join the District 113 Board of Education because I am deeply invested in the success of our community’s students,” said Jody Elliott-Schrimmer. “As a 15-year resident of Highland Park, parent of three children who attend District 112 schools, an educator, educational researcher, and community organizer, I have dedicated my life to helping young people become the best versions of themselves. I also want to help heal relationships and build trust. I understand the power of listening, and I want to work with staff, administration, and the community to come together, discuss problems and find resolutions.”
Ms. Elliott-Schrimmer continued, “I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and thank Jaime Barraza, the first person of color to serve on our board. His commitment to education paved the way for this historic moment. As the first Black woman in this role, it is my sincere hope that I won’t be the last. I hope my presence on the Board will be a reminder that we can continually strive for inclusivity in the midst of excellence.”
Ms. Elliott-Schrimmer is an educator at Evanston Township High School with over 15 years of experience teaching English. She serves on the Board of The Balance Project, a non-profit organization focused on helping people access emotional wellness and support. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from The George Washington University, a Master of Science in education from Northwestern University, a Master of Arts in school leadership from Concordia University, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in curriculum studies at DePaul University. She resides in Highland Park with her husband and three children.

La Sra. Elliott-Schrimmer continuó: “Sería negligente el que yo no reconociera y le diera las gracias a Jaime Barraza, la primera persona de color que sirvió en nuestra junta. Su dedicación hacia la educación allanó el camino para este momento histórico. Como la primera mujer negra en este papel, espero sinceramente no ser la última. Espero que mi presencia en la Junta sea un recordatorio de que podemos luchar continuamente por la inclusión en medio de la excelencia.”
La Sra. Elliott-Schrimmer es una educadora en la escuela Evanston Township High School con más de 15 años de experiencia enseñando inglés. Es miembro de la Mesa Directiva de The Balance Project, una organización sin fines de lucro enfocada en ayudar a las personas a accesar el bienestar emocional y el apoyo. Ella cuenta con una Licenciatura en Artes del Idioma Inglés de la Universidad George Washington, una Maestría en Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad Northwestern, una Maestría en Artes de Liderazgo Escolar de la Universidad de Concordia, y está cursando un Doctorado en estudios curriculares en la Universidad DePaul. Reside en Highland Park con su esposo y sus tres hijos.
