DFDC RUNS GREAT RACES AT NILES WEST AS BRODSKY PLACES FIFTH INDIVIDUALLY, SOPHOMORES PLACE 2ND, AND FRESHMEN WIN

On Saturday, the DFDC traveled to Niles West for the Pat Savage Invite. The weather was ripe for fast times, so many personal records fell. And Deerfield left the meet with a handful of hardware.

In the varsity race, senior Bradley Brodsky had perhaps his best race of the season. He got out with the leaders but started to fade as the first mile turned to the second. Brodsky fell back to around eighth place. Once on the track finish with 300 meters to go, Brodsky found another gear and earned a fifth place medal with a 15:42 performance, his fastest time of the season. Junior Ben Kraemer ran a solid race to finish 30th in 16:38, and then junior Jacob Nitsun was the third Warrior into the chute in 17:02. Then followed a senior trio of Jonathan Wallk, Declan Black, and Brett Needelman. The Warriors finished in 8th place out of 23 3A teams despite only running juniors and seniors on their varsity roster. The scores were so tight that only three points separated fifth place from Deerfield in eighth place.

On the Sophomore level, the DFDC took home a trophy for their second place finish out of 20 3A teams. A runner from Willowbrook gapped the entire field by about 30 seconds, and Josh Puyear was in the next pack fighting for second place. Ultimately, Puyear broke away from that pack, and actually reeled in the leader to the point where he finished in second place by only seven seconds. Charlie Hart had another great race finishing in twelfth place in 17:41. Following Hart was Joe Healy with a huge personal best (18th, 17:27), AJ Osborn (19th, 17:27), and Jonah Kaplan (26th, 17::45) who also set a huge personal best and broke the 18-minute barrier for the first time. Zack Greco (30th, 17:50) also ran a personal best as the team’s sixth runner.

The talented DFDC freshmen came out and won the freshmen champioship! Over the “two mile” course that was actually a bit long, they were led by freshmen twins Ryan Bernstein (1st, 11:07) and Cole Bernstein (3rd, 11:10). Also medaling in the top ten were Eric Lakemaker (7th, 11:20) and Alex Luo (9th, 11:30). Lucas Moskovitz rounded out the scoring for the victorious Warriors in 19th place. This was a big win over 15 3A teams, but a lot of hard work must follow if the freshmen class hopes to replicate this success on the varsity level in the future.

Next the DFDC heads to Wheeling for their final tune-up before the CSL Championships on their home course.
