Ms. Yaffa Berman
A native of Israel, Yaffa’s formal education include receiving a B.A. and teaching certificate from the prestigious Teachers College in Israel, Machon David Yelin. She then received a B.A. in Literature and Bible from Ben Gurion University.
Upon reaching Chicago, Yaffa began her teaching career, which has spanned several decades. She taught in various congregational and day school and adult education settings. Yaffa also earned an M.A. in Jewish Education and Administration from Spertus Institute.
Yaffa joined the staff of the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago in 1995. Her tenure with the CFJE included creating, spearheading and implementing several key programs. Yaffa built the Department of Hebrew Language, serving both adults and teens. Yaffa became the agency’s Assistant Executive Director in 2005 and Executive Director of Jewish Education in 2011, which enabled her to bring her excellent administrative skills to the forefront with regard to building a professional team at CFJE. For the past 5 years Yaffa serves as a Hebrew instructor at Deerfield High School.
The Hebrew curriculum will be focused on the proficiency approach to language acquisition and culture. It will utilize the four basic skills for language learning: speaking, reading, listening, writing, and culture. We will be using the book Hebrew from Scratch, in addition to various resources and enrichment materials. This curriculum integrates technology, visual media, auditory tools and newspapers to enrich and make the language learning more engaging and relevant.
