Standard Response Protocol

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is an “all hazards” plan that provides consistent language and actions among all students, staff and first responders. It is currently being used by over 50,000 school districts, agencies, and organizations worldwide, including local entities such as Districts 106, 109, 112, and the City of Highland Park.

The premise of the SRP is simple - there are five Core Actions and Directives to implement in any school emergency. When communicating these protocols, each “Action” is followed by a “Directive.”

Hold

Hold is followed by the Directive: "In Your Room or Area" and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants.

Secure

Secure is followed by the Directive: "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors" and is the protocol used to safeguard people within the building.

Lockdown

Lockdown is followed by "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" and is the protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep occupants quiet and in place.

Evacuate

Evacuate may be followed by a location, and is used to move people from one location to a different location in or out of the building.

Shelter

Shelter and state the Hazard and Safety Strategy for group and self protection.

The SRP replaced A.L.I.C.E. as our primary Emergency Response Framework at the start of the 2025-2026 School Year.
