State Seal of Biliteracy
Overview
Developing biliteracy—the ability to read and write proficiently in two languages—is an invaluable asset for future career and post-secondary readiness. In an increasingly globalized world, biliterate individuals stand out to universities and employers because they possess superior cognitive skills, such as enhanced problem-solving and multitasking abilities, and they demonstrate cultural competence. This proficiency opens doors to a wider range of careers, including roles in international business, diplomacy, healthcare, technology, and education, often leading to higher earning potential. Ultimately, biliteracy moves students beyond basic communication to a deeper level of engagement with diverse knowledge and professional opportunities, making them highly versatile and competitive candidates in any future endeavor.
Township High School District 113 students have the opportunity to be recognized by the State of Illinois for earning proficiency in English and an additional language. The Illinois Board of Education's Seal of Biliteracy program will confer official recognition on the diploma and transcripts of those students who qualify. Please review the qualifying details on the Illinois State Board of Education’s Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy website.
Two honors are available:
- The Seal of Biliteracy: is awarded to students whose proficiency level is equivalent to the Intermediate High or Advanced Low scale set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
- The Commendation Toward Biliteracy: is awarded to students whose proficiency level is equivalent to the Intermediate Low or Intermediate Mid scale set in a second language.
