Emergency Closing Information
We know that closing school is disruptive to the learning process and to families, and we take this step only when it is absolutely necessary in order to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, particularly those who walk or are bused to school.
School Cancellations & Late Starts
District 113 takes numerous factors into consideration when making our determination as to whether to cancel school, follow a late start schedule or dismiss early due to inclement weather. We continually monitor the forecast from the National Weather Service, which includes predicted air temperature, wind chill, wind speed/gusts and chance of precipitation. We also take into consideration the timing of the inclement weather, whether or not the buildings are operational (heat, electricity, etc.) and accessible, and the condition of the roads; District staff and bus drivers travel the area and consult Lake County web-cams and video feeds. The Superintendent also consults with all operations department heads (transportation, buildings and grounds, maintenance, plant managers and food service), as well as building principals and sender district superintendents, to gain their insights prior to making the decision.
If school is canceled in District 113 or a late start schedule is to be followed, families will be notified no later than 5:30 a.m. using all District notification systems. School closing information, including class and bus schedules in the instance of a late start, will also be posted on the District 113, HPHS and DHS websites. Decisions regarding after-school and evening activities will be made and communicated by 1 p.m. on that particular day. District 113 also sends school closing information to the local media and to Emergencyclosings.com, which notifies all local television and radio stations.
In the event of an early dismissal, the decision will be made as soon as possible on the day affected, and every effort will be made to notify parents/guardians immediately via an Infinite Campus emergency phone and e-mail message. A decision regarding after-school activities will be made and communicated as early as possible. Information, including class and bus schedules, also will be posted on the District 113, HPHS and DHS websites.
Crisis Response Guidelines
If an emergency situation arises in our area during school hours, we will notify families with information as it becomes available. We will work closely with city officials and the police and fire departments to provide as much information as possible. We ask that you look to the following for accurate information from the District:
- Website - The District and school websites will have an emergency on-screen alert
- Social Media - The school Facebook and Twitter accounts will contain the same messaging as our website
- Phone Calls & Text Messages - We can reach all parents and guardians immediately through our messaging systems. To ensure we can reach you in the event of an emergency, please make sure your communication preferences are up-to-date in Infinite Campus.
During school lockdown drills, we will send test messages via email and text message.
Specific information regarding our crisis response protocols, such as relocation sites, paths used, and overall practice and procedures, is not being made publicly available for safety and security reasons. In the event of an emergency, we will work with local authorities to communicate important information as it relates to the situation at hand.
If an emergency or disaster should occur, we are confident that our staff is prepared to respond to the situation and will take all measures to keep our students safe. As a parent, your first instinct might be to call the school or go to the school. We kindly ask that you refrain from doing so in order to ensure that our lines of outgoing communication are clear, our staff is available to support students on site, and the roads and driveways are clear for any first responders that may need to attend to the situation. We will work collaboratively with local law enforcement, as well as surrounding schools and businesses, if applicable. Please trust in the preparedness of the school staff and emergency personnel to swiftly and effectively handle any crisis event.
Reporting Potential Threats
The safety and security of its students and staff is always District 113's highest priority. Any threat, regardless of the perceived severity, is always treated as a credible threat. We have developed a platform for reporting potential threats, STOP (Speak TO Prevent), which is also accessible via the following URL: dist113.org/stop. The STOP platform is designed to notify the appropriate school and District staff so the situation can be addressed in the fastest and most efficient way possible. We encourage you to use the STOP platform if you hear anything that threatens the safety or well-being of our students, staff, or school.
