District 113 Diversity Committee

Creating an Equitable School System
An equitable school system is one that works to address the needs of each individual student and improves performance and raises achievement for ALL students. Equitable school systems eliminate the racial and economic predictability and disproportionality of which student groups occupy the highest and lowest achievement categories.

2006-07 Focus on Diversity

How do our behaviors demonstrate that District 113 is truly an "equitable school system" that provides appropriate academic opportunities for ALL learners?

To what degree does the curriculum provide academic opportunity for a wide range of students?
Who is enrolled in this class? Who is NOT enrolled in this class? Why? How is a student admitted into a class? Are there barriers? Who is teaching this class? Have we implemented our belief that all students can learn and succeed? How do we know - in both quantitative and qualitative measures - that our behaviors and practices are successful and have benefited our students?

To what degree does this curriculum allow for differentiated instruction? How do we know that instruction geared to the needs of the individual student is happening?
What is it that the students should know and be able to do? How will we know when students know it and are able to do it? What do we do when we discover that students don't know it and are not able to do it? What are the barriers that inhibit student progress? What feedback do we provide students and is it timely? What feedback do we provide parents and Is it timely? Do we provide the students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery and success? How do we achieve AYP?

What does the data tell us about our practices?
What are the grade and demographic analysis (by teacher/course/department)? What about attrition rate and reason? What is the post-secondary success of students in college?

What are some of the exceptional programs (as supported by anecdotal, quantitative and/or qualitative data) in our department and district.

The Policy sub-committee and Audit sub-committee will continue their work from last year.
