SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Bobbie Monroe, Athletic Director, introduced herself to the PTO members and gave a brief history of her background. She praised HPHS as having a "friendliness" and "supportive" community with great coaches. Her philosophy about competition is that winning is important, but representing HP in a 1st class way is most important. She is looking at repairing the locker room facility at Wolter’s Field within a 2-3 year period. The City Council has approved an outside commercial advertising board at Wolter’s Field and the dedication will take place Friday during halftime of the football game. Ms. Monroe’s approach to her new position is one of an "open door policy". She welcomes anyone to come and speak with her. When asked if there was any initiative for start-up club sports, she said there is talk of girl’s badminton for the spring and field hockey in the fall.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES REPORT: Lesa Friedrich reported that Homecoming had record attendance. Class ring orders are being taken. There is a Costume Day Contest on Halloween. Requests to bring excess candy to the school after Halloween will bring a contribution to the Juvenille Diabetes Foundation. The Dance Show is scheduled for March, auditions are Oct. 23rd. There are some calendar changes. Battle of the Bands is rescheduled and Pack the Place changed from Dec.15th to Feb.2nd. The process for a request for new club proposals are evaluated in the spring. Consideration is based on purpose, goals, and contribution to community. The student senate asks questions, finds sponsors, then decision goes to the

district office. This can be a 3yr. process.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORTS: Focus on the Arts- Embrace the World, 380 volunteers (the largest ever) coordinated a citywide mailer for donations for the weeklong event. Fundraising – only 70 decks of discount cards left out of 400. Hospitality – Open House dinner to faculty went well and was appreciated by staff. School Board liason tells parent community that delegate positions are available for the District 113 Caucus. Parent Education – Feb.28th at 7:30 there will be a presentation on Coping with Family Illness and Death. The Discretionary committee meets in November to determine club needs. Information for Late Nite HP can be emailed to Sue Resnick.

TREASURER’S REPORT: No changes to budget. Sales of adbook for graduation brings an increase of revenue to $2000.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: The minutes of the Sept.18th PTO meeting were approved and can now be found on the PTO website.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: John Scornavacco addressed the Deerfield incident and described HPHS’s involvement. Administrators and counselors went to DHS to assist in helping students cope with the tragedy. This unfortunate accident brings an increase in the need for a teachable opportunity. A crash simulation is scheduled for this year, link crew can focus on small groups of juniors and seniors speaking to freshman on how to say no, city (to include Highwood) and school officials are discussing having a town hall meeting and providing resources and speakers to parents and students in the HP and DFLD communities. This outreach effort should include students at the junior high level to help foster appropriate behavior at an earlier age. Mr. Scornavacco also discussed an email that was sent out to parents regarding an outbreak of fighting that occurred in the school. This email was sent to assure families of awareness, investigation and consequences. He also informed parents, in response to a concern that requests for

transcripts are not going out in a timely fashion, has been addressed. Transcripts will go out within one week of the request. Transcripts can go out in Aug. and not wait until Sept. On a personal note, he saw Stunts and loved it.

MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AT 9:42PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Berk
PTO Secretary
