HPHS PTO MEETING FEBRUARY 11, 2008
ATTENDANCE: Jody Weinberg, Susan Berk, Carrie Codell, Amy Perlmutter, Beth Conen, Martha Biede, Amy Kaufman, Diane Carsman, Sarah Liebman, Lesa Friedrich, John Scornavacco, Janna Berk, Marjie Sandlow, Tom Koulentes, Elissa Halpern, Terri Olian, Patty PEll I. MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: 9:15 am by Jody Weinberg, president. Jody expressed her thanks to our parent education committee for the outstanding job they did on the recent program. II. Minutes – motion made and passed to approve Dec. Minutes. III. HPHS GREEN SCHOOL INITIATIVE: Tom Koulentes gave a very informative presentation on the new and exciting "club" at HPHS: GSI (GREEN SCHOOL INITIATIVE). Students and faculty are committed to making HPHS a more enviromentally and eco friendly institution. This group is immersed in a wide variety of activites to promote Green Initiatives in our high school and around the Highland Park commntiy. Examples include: recycling bins throughout the school, green cleaning products being used by our maintenance staff, new water dispensers to encourage using refillable water bottles. Future goals include establishing a tutle sanctuary and butterfly garden, establishing indoor gardens to "scrub" the air, converting frying oil to diesel oil that can be used with lawn equipment. Another goal is to promote car pooling, walking and biking to school. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend the GSI meetings which take place the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in Room A119. Please feel free to contact Tom for additional information. IV. Principal's report: Mr. Scornavacco reported that lunch with principals very successful. Charity drive is up and running. New principal identified and will be approved shortly. Problems with traffic on Vine are still being worked on with the city. V. Student Activities Report: Lesa Freidrich reported on a wide variety of activities happening at HPHS during the month of Feb. including the following items: Charity Drive, Black History month, Theatre production of the Diary of Anne Frank, Valentine's Dance, All City Band and Orchestra concerts, many academic groups traveling for competitions. Winter formal registration on line. VI. Treasurer's Report: Website set-up and maintenance is needed. Meetings with District 112 PTO presidents to work with a company so that we can get a discount. Motion made to approve up to $3500 for set up and $1500 or maintenance fee. Motion second and approved. VII. Committee Reports: Nominating committee to meet after meeting today. Health fair is April 15. Volunteers needed. Contact co-chairs Marietta Stevens or Corinne Bronson Adatto. Deal Deck Card fundraiser was a success and wil continue next year. Grad Night planning is in full swing. Focus on the Arts is looking for volunteers. See their webpage at: www.dist113.org/hphs/focus VIII. Old/New Business: Terri Olian reported that HP Late Nite has at least 15 kids presenting at different venues throughout the month.
