Matt Kovalcik's Top Ten Sites

Here they are: the top ten sites for you to go in search of information on A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Though this is far from a list of every site about Shakespeare on the Internet, (what fools these mortals be! -- that would have taken me forever to compile!), these ten are the best that I found related to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Some specialize in literary criticism, while others may have information on the text itself. But what they have in common is substance that will aid any student in reading and understanding Shakespeare.

So go forth and surf well!

10.  http://daphne.palomar.edu/shakespeare/lambtales/LTMND.HTM

This is a complete “translation” of the play into English that any student can understand.  I would recommend using it only after having read the true version, not as a substitute, because you would miss many of the nuances that make Shakespeare’s writing classic by reading the doctored version first.

9.  http://www.foxsearchlight.com/midfinal/

The newest incarnation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the big screen has this as its official site.  If you were looking to do a comparison/contrast paper, this would be the place to find your material on the film.

8.  http://www.bartleby.com/99/138.8.html

A great all-around site; it specializes in quotations from most literary classics.  This particular site (with the numbers at the end) will take you directly to the Midsummer quotes, but you can search for quotations from other sources from here as well.

7.  http://www.io.com/~jlockett/Grist/English/dream-sources.html

A short essay on the play, I found this one especially interesting because it touches on the tragedy vs. comedy aspects of Midsummer quite nicely and concisely.

6.  http://quarles.unbc.ca/midsummer/midsummer1.html

This site has a complete, online annotated text that can be use either as a way to read the book without buying it or as a way to clarify what some words or phrases mean.  The only thing I didn’t like was that you were sent to a separate site each time you wanted to see the definition of a word.

5.  http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/forestoakms/abita/msnd/

Another school seems to have taken Highland Park High School’s lead.  This site is their work and projects regarding A Midsummer Night’s Dream that they have put online.  It has a very nice archive including artwork, stories, and essays all based on the play.

4.  http://www.shakespeareindex.net/

This is a fabulous index of Internet resources that are related to Midsummer.  If you are looking for anything from literary criticism to info on the movie, this is a good site to use as a jumping-off point.

3.  http://www.allshakespeare.com/plays/midsummer/ps.shtml

A strong index of literary criticism, critiques of the play, analysis, and any other of other form of feedback you could think of.  This site has it all.

2.  http://www.pathguy.com/mnd.htm

Another essay site that has articles on all aspects of Midsummer, so if you don’t have a topic to write about, or have one and need a jump-start to writing, this is a good site to use because of the amount of documents they have.

1.  http://www.ipl.org/cgi-bin/ref/litcrit/litcrit.out.pl?ti=mid-119

Simply, the best site I visited.  This one has the most extensive collection of literary criticism on every issue regarding A Midsummer Night’s Dream: love, magic, anger, fairies…the list goes on.  This is definitely the first site to go when looking for information about the play.
