The Goals of the Green School Initiative The Green School Initiative at Highland Park High School is dedicated to creating projects and programs that revolve around serving six major goals.
REUSE— GSI is developing methods for reusing greater amounts of school resources in order to reduce the overall waste generated by the school. RECYCLE— GSI is creating and sustaining all-school recycling programs for all recyclable materials within the school. Paper, plastics, aluminum and glass are all currently being recycled, and all electronic equipment, as well as cell phone/lap top batteries are recycled as well. RESEARCH— the members of GSI are actively conducting investigations, both in the classroom and after school, to find new ways to become more environmentally efficient and responsible. When discoveries or advances are made, GSI will publish and share its work with the community. REDESIGN— when possible, GSI is helping to redesign existing school structures and spaces to better incorporate environmentally-efficient designs into the physical school building. GSI is working to incorporate LEED standards into existing school structures. EDUCATION— GSI is developing programs, curricula, and practices that serve to educate the school and community about environmental issues. Green School Initiative Home Page
