Anti-idling Campaign at HPHS

Project Summary:

In partnership with the City of Highland Park, GSI is working to reduce the amount of car idling that occurs in and around the city and school. Research has demonstrated that allowing a car to idle produces significantly more pollution than running a car at 50 mph.  Simply shutting off the car engine while parents are waiting to pick students up after school can greatly reduce the amount of pollution that is generated in our community each day.  GSI is working to create education and awareness so that Highland Park residents choose to not idle their cars.

Goals of the Project:

  • Teach community members and students about the pollution caused by idling car engines

  • Get more people to choose not to idle their automobiles

  • Post anti-idling signs around campus

Results:

This project was initiated during the winter of 2008; results are yet to be assessed.

Next Steps:

  • Develop means of measuring effectiveness of educational campaign

  • Post more signs on campus and create more educational information to distribute
