CHEZ NOUS:  MONTAUBAN

‑ A Reciprocal Exchange ‑

Chez Nous: Montauban is a student and school exchange program between schools in Montauban, France, and in the Chicago area.  The two‑week immersion program in culture and language was instituted in 1980 to compliment and bring to life what was being taught in our classrooms.

You and your son or daughter will participate in a cultural exchange that involves the family, the school and the community.  Your French student will spend two weeks in your home, participate in your daily life, partake in excursions and activities planned by the school and you, and attend classes in school with your son or daughter.  Because of this, he or she will have a much deeper understanding of language and culture than a casual visitor as will your son or daughter when he returns the visit.  And you as a family, hosting a French student, sharing with and involving him or her in your daily activities, and showing your perception of Chicago and life in the United States will be building a bridge of understanding, and forming a long lasting friendship.

The heart of this program is the homestay.  A reciprocal exchange is based on receiving as well as visiting.  There is much to gain from both.  The friendship with someone from another culture is not complete until you have lived with this person in his or her own surroundings.  As the goal of the program is a complete or reciprocal experience, preference will be given to those who are intending to participate in both parts of the program.

Students who wish to participate should be willing to extend themselves to others, to share their life style, and to be willing and open to receive the same in return.  To ensure the continued success of our program, students desiring to take part in the program will have to receive a favorable evaluation from their teachers in school.

To prepare the family and students for the hosting and visiting, there will be orientation meetings and informative materials.  In addition to individual school sessions, there will be an organized program and administrative meeting for parents and students in May 2009.

In this reciprocal exchange program, French students will be coming to the Chicago area in April for a two-week stay (Tentative dates: April 17 – May 01, 2009).  In June, when classes will be over in Chicago area schools, but still in session in France, our students will travel to Montauban for their home stay.

The exchange program in Montauban is followed by a four‑day Paris stay for our students.

Since space on Air France is limited, we encourage you to sign up as early as possible.  Note that those who register early can also take advantage of reduced program prices.  More specifics and details concerning the programs are covered in the following pages.

CHEZ NOUS: MONTAUBAN 2009 + PARIS
A program has been instituted to provide an exchange between English language teachers and their students in Montauban and French language teachers at Highland Par High School.  Students will live and go to school with their respective penpals; excursions and activities will be planned and organized by the hosting parents and teachers to compliment the classroom activities.  A correspondence will be established between the teachers and their students as soon as the groups are formed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND FEATURES
RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE
:  Teachers and students from the “Institut Familial” in Montauban will be visiting students and schools in Chicago in April/May 2009.  The program is based on a reciprocal exchange and preference will be given to those who participate in both parts of the exchange.  Hosting families are responsible for providing lodging and 3 meals daily.

EXCURSIONS AND ACTIVITIES:  Excursions and activities are to be arranged by the hosting parents and teachers and coordinated respectively by Highland Park High School and by the “Institut Familial” in Montauban.  Two full day bus excursions are to be planned to acquaint the visiting students with Chicago and with the region surrounding Montauban.  Additional activities and excursions are to be organized for the purpose of acquainting the visiting students with French and American life styles and the area in which the hosting school is located.  Since school will be in session, hosting students are not necessarily expected to participate in all excursions provided for their visitors.  Visiting students are required and expected to participate in all activities and excursions arranged for them by their families and schools.

A $100 hosting fee to cover these excursions and activities has been included in the price of the program. Comparable fees will be collected from the French families to cover our students' excursions while in Montauban.

ORIENTATIONS are considered part of the program and attendance is required for all participants.  In addition to the individual group sessions with each teacher/leader, there will be an organized program and administrative meeting for parents and students in May 2009.  Attendance is required at all meetings.

Students who fail to attend all meetings could be eliminated from the trip, incurring cancellation fees.  We have found that students who have put a lot of thought and effort into the orientation program are more responsive to the new experiences and situations demanded of them in France.

IN PARIS: Each group will have a pre-planned itinerary.  The participants are expected to participate in all group activities.  Leisure time will be provided each afternoon.

ALTERNATE TRAVEL PLANS: Should a participant not wish to return with the group but at a later date from Paris with Air France, there will be a $75 administrative fee charged by Air France and a $100 administrative fee charged by MiCES for each air modification requested for an individual participant. All alternative travel will be booked in G class and is dependent on space availability in this class. Alternative travel plans must be indicated to MiCES, in writing, well in advance.  Changes made after 90 days (March 14) prior to departure will be subject to an additional $150 administrative fee.  No alternative travel plans will be made 60 (April 14) days prior to departure.  All travel plans after leaving the group must be submitted in writing to MiCES by May 10, 2009.  We strongly suggest you make your request as soon as possible to avoid additional air costs.  For information and to request a form regarding change of return date, contact Karen Provan at (709) 482-9055 (c/o MiCES, 9810 W. 58th Street, Countryside, IL 60825)
