Philosophy
The Highland Park High School Honor Society was established to recognize
the achievements of students in scholarship, leadership, and service at
Highland Park High School. To create an inclusive honor society that
acknowledges that students make contributions to the school in many ways,
the Highland Park High School Honor Society celebrates student
contributions in scholarship, leadership, and service separately. In
other words, students can apply for recognition in each of these areas and
become a member of the Honor Society.

Procedures
Students are encouraged to
familiarize themselves with the procedures and requirements for
membership into the Honor Society as early as freshman year so they will
be ready to make application as soon as they are eligible. All
students who are interested in making application to the Honor Society
should keep records of their achievements that later could serve as the
basis for their application.
All members of the Honor Society,
whether they have been recognized for scholarship, leadership, and
service, are honored equally. In addition to planning the induction
ceremonies, the Honor Society sponsors maintain records and verify the
applications.
All Students with a 3.00
un-weighted/4.00 weighted GPA will receive a membership invitation.
Students may make applications to become a member of the HPHS Honor
Society immediately after their fifth or seventh semester has
been completed. Both juniors and seniors are eligible.
Students may continue to work toward Honor Society membership until
second semester of their senior year.
Every applicant is required to
submit signatures from ten teachers who can attest to the student’s
character (see attached). Any student who violates school
expectations (as listed in the criteria for leadership and service or as
outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook) can be removed from Honor
Society.
New members will be inducted each
semester. In addition, all new members will be recognized.
Sponsors and coaches are
responsible for making expectations clear for students who wish to apply
for membership in the Honor Society. They act as school officials
when they verify student participation according to the guidelines of
the HPHS Honor Society.

| Scholarship Certificates
A scholarship certificate can be attained by
achieving a 3.60/4.00 (unweighted) or 4.60/5.00 (weighted) cumulative grade
point average by semester 5,6, or 7 (in addition to character
requirements.)
A student with the appropriate grade point
average will be notified by mail if he/she is eligible for the
scholarship award. A student who is eligible of a scholarship
certificate must complete the Confirmation of Character application to
be recognized for this certificate.
A 3.60 (or 4.60) GPA represents an academic
standard of a student who attains an average of 3 A’s and 2 B’s per
semester, not specific GPA of A, A-, B+, or B.

| Leadership or Service Applications
Candidates must have achieved at least a
cumulative B average (3.00/4.00 or 4.00/5.00) and meet the requirements for
character. After you receive your fifth, sixth or seventh
semester grades and they fall within the above range you can fill out
the applications for Leadership and/or Service.
10 points in each category of leadership and/or
service are necessary to earn a leadership and/or service certificate.
Because membership in the Honor Society is a
school recognition, leadership and service should be demonstrated in
programs or activities sponsored by HPHS.
Applicants determine whether an activity should
be counted as service or as leadership. In this way, students can
apply for the certificate that they have the best chance of attaining.
A single act should only be counted once and
under only one category leadership or service.
A student applying for a leadership or service
certificate may receive one point for being an officer of a
school-related club or organization, another point can be earned each
semester for taking a leadership role above and beyond expectations.
Therefore, an officer of a club or school organization can receive a
maximum of three points per year in any one club or organization.
A member (non-officer) can receive a maximum of two points per year in
any one-school organization.
A Student applying for a leadership or service
certificate may receive one point for being a captain of a team; another
point can be earned each season for taking a role above and
beyond expectations. Therefore, a captain of a sports team can
receive a maximum of two points per year in any one sport, one for being
a captain and one for participation above expectations in any one sport.
A team member (non-captain) can receive a maximum of one point per year
in any one sport.
Members of the Honor Society must maintain the
minimum GPA required for admission to the Honor Society in order to be
members in good standing. Otherwise, they are put on probation for
a semester to allow them to raise their GPA to acceptable standards.
Students can be removed from the Honor Society
if they violate school expectations (as listed in the criteria for
leadership and service or as outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook) or
if they do not maintain the minimum GPA for induction into the branch of
the Honor Society of which they are members.
