In Text Citations - APA
All examples below have been directly taken from A Pocket Style Manual, Fourth Edition by Diana Hacker and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition.
Sample 1 - Author's
name mentioned in the signal phrase
Introduce the quotation with
a signal phrase that includes the author's last name followed by the date of
publication in parentheses. Put the page number (preceded by "p.) in parentheses
after the quotaion.
Hanson (2003) understood the meaning [introduced in the second document]to be more profound than the original idea" (p.75).
Sample 2 - Author's
name is NOT mentioned in the signal phrase
Write the author's
last name, the year, and the page number in parentheses after the quotation, if
you do not include the author in the signal phrase: (Hanson,
2003, p.75)
He mentioned, "The meaning was more profound than the original idea" (Hanson, 2003, p.75), although, he was unable to be more specific.
Sample 3 - A summary
or parahrase rather than a direct quotation
Write the author's last name and
the date either in a signal phrase at the beginning of the essay or in
parentheses after it. You do not need a page number a or a paraphrase
.
According to Johnson (2000), the experiment was considered unethical by
the National Chemistry Association and possible criminal charges may be the
result.
The experiment may result in criminal charges after the National
Chemistry Association found the process to be unethical. (Johnson, 2000).
Sample 3 - Two
Authors
Name both authors in the signal phrase or parentheses
each time you cite the work. In the parentheses, use "&" between the
authors' names; in the signal phrase, use "and."
Landson and Carter (2006) realized the mistakes made by the past agency(p.567).
There were severl mistakes made by the past agency (Landson& Carter, 2006, p. 567).
Sample 3 - Three To
Five Authors
Write every author in the signal phrase or parentheses when you cite the
first time.
Interaction is key within the context of human development (Kim, Wilson, Jackson, & Cohen, 1997).
In subsequent citations,
use the first authors name followed by "et al." in either the signal phrase or
the parantheses:
(Kim et al.,
1979)
Sample 4 - Six or
More Authors
Use the first author's name followed by "et al." in the signal phrase
or parentheses
Child Developemnt has several distinct stages (Williams et al., 2006).
Sample 5 - Unknown
Author
Write the work's title in the signal phrase or give the first word or
two of the title in the paenthetical citation. Titles of articles and chapters
are put in "quotation marks"; titles of books and reports are
italicized.
Several factors play a key role in the creation of a Tornado ("Tornado," 1999).
