The vision of the science department faculty, "Scientific Literacy for All", is based on the following values that reflect the District 113 Learning for Life Abilities.
- Our students will be scientifically literate graduates who can put content into context. It
is important for all citizens to be able to understand science-related
issues in order to make decisions on how they affect their lives.
- Our students will have a passion to learn more science upon graduation. Science is engaging in all of its various disciplines. DHS graduates
are introduced to biology, chemistry, physics and earth science
through their core courses. It is hoped that interestes in particular
topics will be discovered and pursued throughout life.
- Our students will be able to use the scientific method to question ideas and think critically. Can we believe everything we hear in the daily media? Use of the scientific method allows one to amke those decisions through critical thinking.
- Our students will see connections in science. Biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science are all interrelated. DHS students are encouraged to make connections between the disciplines in the curriculum as it is presented.
- Our students will see the applications of science to everyday
living. Science allows us to harness nature to our benefit.
Our basic needs are
supplied through science applications. DHS students have
an awareness of this as presented in the curriculum.
