SPECIAL
EDUCATION
Special
Education programs are available to students who have been identified by
the school as having a disabling condition that significantly interferes
with educational achievement. To be eligible for special education services
and classes, a student must have a complete Case Study Evaluation which
identifies a disability according to Federal, State and local regulations
and an Individual Education Plan which prescribes specific services and
programs. To initiate the process to determine if a student is eligible
for special education services, contact your guidance counselor and request
that your child’s learning be reviewed by our problem-solving team.
LEARNING
RESOURCE CENTER (LRC) - 9753
Students
with identified learning disabilities are taught specific learning strategies
to compensate for specific disabilities in reading, language and/or mathematical
skills. Materials from students’ academic courses are used in the
application of compensatory techniques. In addition, individualized goals
may include the areas of study strategies, self-advocacy, social skills
and post high school planning. Students receive assistance in becoming more
self-aware of their learning strengths and weaknesses. Case Managers communicate
with classroom teachers regarding student progress. Students assigned 4
periods or more per week earn 1/2 credit per semester and those who attend
2 periods per week earn 1/4 credit per semester. Students who attend less
than three periods do not earn credit. The number of days a week a student
is assigned to the LRC is determined at an IEP conference. LRC is a pass/fail
course.
