Freshman Advisory is assigned to all freshmen for the purpose of orienting students to Deerfield High School's programs, facilities, and extracurricular activities. Advisory class assists students in their development of self and social awareness skills that will support them as they establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible personal and academic decisions. Developing efficient and effective study skills is also an area of focus for Freshman Advisory. Music advisory is an option for students. In addition to the standard performance-based music curriculum taught in the freshman music classes, the music advisories also include the essential elements of the freshman advisory program. Music advisories participate in many group presentations, guest speakers, and other advisory initiatives. Specific advisory activities designed to develop self and social awareness skills, build positive relationships, and make healthy decisions are chosen from among the provided resources and included appropriately as time allows.

The Freshman Advisory curriculum is comprised of three units: Transitions, Academic Skills, and Social-Emotional Learning. While the distinctiveness of each unit exists in the skills addressed, the units are not taught consecutively. Rather, portions of each unit run throughout the year as school activities change and student needs arise.
