20th
Century History and Literature is an integrated, team-taught course
for
seniors that uses both historical and literary texts. These readings, along
with
certain films, music, and art explore ideas and themes within a particular
context, and expose larger human truths. Student work is focused on class
discussion and daily writing. Units of study are designed to explore specific
historical eras, to expose a number of ongoing and connected themes, and to
develop higher-order thinking and communication skills. Assignments focus on the
integration of the disciplines. Students receive credit in both Social Studies
and English. Units of study may include Colonialism in Africa, the Russian
Revolution, WWI, The Rise of Totalitarianism, WWII and the Bomb, the Holocaust,
and Apartheid in
Master and Margarita, Darkness at Noon, Regeneration, The Plague,
Copenhagen, Hamlet, Night, Cry, The Beloved Country, and
My Traitor’s
Heart. Students receive credit in both Social
Studies and English.
