Junior English, Level II

2173

Prerequisites: Freshman and Sophomore English. Students are recommended for American Literature based on their previous English grades and teacher recommendations. Junior English is a full-year course and must be taken during a student’s junior year.

Students explore the diverse American experience through a variety of literary genres. Throughout the year, students gain exposure to a number of literary and historical perspectives on what it means to be an American.  Additionally, students explore these ideas and issues using a set of different literary lenses, which challenge students to explore these texts with a new understanding of different perspectives.  Readings vary from year to year but have included: The Crucible, Walden, Beloved, The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye , Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Things They Carried.

In Junior English, students continue their study of the writing process, but major emphasis is on developing multi-paragraph critical essays. By the end of the year students will develop skills in reading and comprehension of sophisticated texts and critical analysis, and gain experience in responding to these through discussion and written analysis.  Classroom activities include large and small group discussions, informal writing opportunities, presentations, and creative projects.  Homework expectations include reading assignments and/or written responses.  Longer-term assignments include, but are not limited to, written essays and creative projects.
