Freshman English, Level II

2013

Prerequisite: None. Placement in this course will be determined by the Eighth Grade Language Arts teachers working collaboratively with the English Department at Deerfield High School .

This year long freshman English course is designed to study the basic structure of short stories, novels, Shakespearean and poetic forms. Students learn and practice active reading strategies including annotation. Students read several texts as a whole class, culminating the year with the study of a 19th century novel. Possible titles include Of Mice and Men, The House on Mango Street , Romeo and Juliet, and A Tale of Two Cities.   In writing, students explore narrative writing and refine paragraph structure.  Students gain an understanding of persuasive writing and the revision process.

Students practice and refine their reading, writing, and speaking skills in a variety of ways such as discussing literature in small and whole group settings, presenting material both formally and informally, completing in-class writing, using the computer labs for a variety of assignments, and reading silently.  Extended group projects also enhance these skills.

Homework expectations include independent reading and writing to extend and reinforce class learning.
