COLLEGE-BOUND PERSONAL SAFETY WORKSHOP
Campus life is a little different than the familiar, safe home environment young adults are used to. This workshop provides the college-bound student with a heightened level of mental, emotional and environmental awareness that will help them to begin their college years in a more safe and secure situation. The physical aspects of self defense training are covered and practiced in detail. Please bring a sack lunch. Workshop activities include the following:


• Discussion about mental, emotional and environmental awareness
• Discussion about campus-specific safety issues
• Learn and practice basic striking, blocking & evasion techniques
• Discover the “Adrenaline Rush” and its effects on physical capabilities
• Learn primary and secondary targets for each strike
• Learn what body parts can be used as weapons
• Learn what “weapons” you carry with you everyday
• Learn and practice methods for releasing and escaping from various holds and grabs
• Learn and practice self defense strategies and techniques for weapon (knife, gun, bat, etc) attacks
• Learn and practice “Distract & Attack”
• Learn strategies and techniques for situations such as multiple attackers, ground fighting, car jacking, etc

Tim Rochford of Empower Training Systems, Inc., began his martial arts training in 1978. He holds a 4th degree Black belt in Kajukenbo Karate and is a certified Personal Trainer. Tim is the designer and instructor of Proactive Personal Security (self defense) program. His clients include schools, Fitness Centers/Health Clubs/Spa facilities, as well as numerous national, regional and local organizations and corporations.

What better time than the lazy days of summer to create your own wonderful hand made altered books/journals! Using old and new photographs, letters written from loved ones, old and new papers, found objects, and memorabilia you will learn to color, cut, fold and bend papers to pop out of your journals. These little treasures make wonderful gifts and keepsakes for those special people in your life! Please bring a pair of sharp scissors, a ruler and a pencil to class. All other materials will be provided.

SUMMER GARDEN WORKSHOP

Looking to make your garden more attractive? Want more color? Join us to have all of your garden design questions answered. We will discuss what to do for a variety of landscape improvements. What needs replacement, removal, transplanting; what needs to be added, and - very important this time of year – pruning. Contrary to a popular misconception, fall is not the ideal time for pruning. Also, the question of how to cut, where, and how much will be discussed. Material fee included in tuition.

DECORATING YOUR HOME/OFFICE WITH ANTIQUES

Do you love antiques, but aren’t sure how to creatively incorporate them into your home décor or office? Are you redecorating an existing space that could be enhanced with antique elements? Josie Cantarelli will teach you how you can integrate and showcase antiques into any style of décor, including American, European, Oriental, or Contemporary. She will teach you how to mix old and new together when decorating in order to get the best effect, whether you want formal or an informal look. There will also be discussion on where to find the right antique for you without breaking your budget. At the end of this session, participants will have acquired a skill-set that can be used immediately.

THE “IN’s” & “OUT’s” OF HOME SAFETY

Does your home have a combustion air problem? Are toxic fumes entering your home? Is your electrical wiring damaging your computer? How safe is your home for your family and guests? This two session class will focus on how to inspect your home and property for both the obvious and not so obvious safety hazards and the steps required to correct them. We will discuss what to look for, what you can safely repair, and when to call in the pro’s. The first class will focus on interior home safety and proactive safety recommendations. The second class will look at the exterior of your home and surrounding property, some discussion of different environmental issues and proactive safety recommendations. This is a valuable course for both the new and experienced homeowner.

The Center was founded in 1976 and is currently located in a peaceful one acre setting in Riverwoods. The mission of the center is to provide integrated General Holistic Medical services for the community. The center’s staff includes: MD’s, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Naprapath, Licensed Nutritionist, Yoga Instructors and counselors.

AYURVEDA – SELF-CARE 

Promote physical, emotional and spiritual well being with Ayurveda, the ancient Indian Medical system. Ayurveda centers on the belief that we are created from nature and possess qualities of the five elements: earth, air, fire, water and space. Three constitutional types are based on these elements: Vata, pitta and kapha. Ayurveda teaches that by knowing your type, you can learn to balance your life through diet, lifestyle, cleansing techniques and herbal remedies. IN AND OUT OF THE PRESSURE COOKER – STRESS REDUCTION IN EVERYDAY LIFE

This will be a lecture/practicum. The first part of the session will be spent learning about our fight or flight response and how it effects our everyday lives. We will then go into an experiential mode and I will lead the group in a gentle exercise designed to release stress from our bodies and preserve our flexibility and youthfulness. We will then learn two breathing exercises great for calming the mind and feeling centered and clear. These exercises are easy to learn, fun to do and are designed to add to your daily life for profound health benefits.

INTRODUCTION TO TAI CHI

Tai Chiuan is a healing/martial art that combines martial arts movement with QI (Chi – vital energy) circulation, breathing and stretching techniques. Tai Chi enhances flexibility, tones the body, helps to promote relaxation and coordination, and is an excellent way to relieve stress and tension. After practicing Tai Chi you will feel refreshed, revitalized, and relaxed. Wear loose fitting comfortable clothing.
