Financial Update Presentation:  March 2010

At the Board of Education meeting on March 22, 2010 Dr. George Fornero provided an update regarding the financial status of Township High School District 113. His presentation was videotaped and is available on the district website. The presentation is approximately 30 minutes in length.

Township High School District 113 will reduce their operating budget for the 2010-2011 school year by approximately 1 million dollars, which represents a 1.5 % reduction. A significant parameter is the Consumer Price Index (CPI) that has fallen from 4.1% in December of 2007 to 0.1% for the 2010-2011 school year. An additional stressor is that the majority of District 113 revenues come from local property taxes. Property values have decreased and the foreclosure rate has increased. Thus, the math is not favorable to a tax-supported institution. In addition, state revenues are projected to decrease significantly which will impact our Special Education, Adult Education, Transportation and Drivers’ Education funding. Having said that, George Fornero made it clear in his presentation that we will not modify class sizes, nor will we need to implement massive layoffs. The budget will be balanced by implementing other cost cutting measures delineated in the Power Point update.
