Calculator Requirements

  • We recognize now more than ever that technology plays an important role in guiding student learning.  To that end, we want to make sure students are prepared with the necessary materials, including the proper calculator.  Over the past several years, our students have used the latest in graphing calculator technology to enhance their classroom experience and deepen their understanding.  As a result, we will continue to use the Texas Instruments (TI) Nspire CXII CAS color graphing calculator in many of our math classes.  This advanced graphing calculator allows content to be presented in a way that focuses on student comprehension of concepts, demonstrates multiple ways to solve problems, and creates a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics.  Additionally, students can save work and reference it at any point in the future, as can teachers if they want to pick up an idea from the previous day’s lesson.  Below is detailed information about the purchase and use of the calculator:

    • The TI-Nspire CXII CAS calculator is available for purchase through many retailers and online.  Please make sure when you make your purchase that you are buying the correct model.  The CAS designation is imperative to participate in classroom activities.  Your student must have the TI-Nspire CXII CAS model (or the older model TI-Nspire CX CAS) to communicate with the Navigator systems in our classrooms.  Some purchasing options available at HPHS are:
      • Students can purchase the calculator online directly through Beck’s Bookstore.  If using this option, students will need to pay for the calculator in full at the time of purchase.
      • If you prefer to set up a payment plan allowing you to pay for the calculator over time, then you will need to work directly with our bookstore in-person at HPHS.
      • If you are a student who is eligible for the FRAM program, then you should work directly with Beck's Bookstore at HPHS to obtain the calculator.
      • If you are a student and forgot your calculator at home, you can rent a calculator for the day by signing a daily rental agreement in person with Beck's Bookstore.
    • The TI-Nspire CXII CAS calculator is not currently allowed on the ACT exam, but it is on the approved list for the SAT and AP Exams.  Given that the state of Illinois has officially adopted the SAT as their state exam, we believe this tool will provide students with considerable benefit on the exam.  Further, while we value our students’ performance on the ACT exam, we believe this technological tool will greatly improve overall student learning and in no way be a detriment to their performance on the ACT.  The ACT exam is not calculator-intensive, and only requires a basic scientific calculator.

The TI-Nspire CXII CAS Graphing Calculator is a colorful, engaging way to explore math and science.  It has the ability to show real-world examples that help students make connections among content.  This calculator is a powerful instructional tool and serves as a means of expanding technological literacy for our students.  We are confident this calculator will positively impact the way your student learns mathematics.  If you would like more information about the TI-Nspire CXII CAS please visit Texas Instrument’s website here.
