District 113 Learning for Life Abilities

District-wide, we identified the essential abilities necessary for our learners to live full, productive lives after they leave District 113. We believe that if we create a learner-centered environment, students will not only experience but will also internalize and transfer the Learning for Life Abilities.

The Learning for Life are abilities that:

  • Are used across all learning experiences, content areas, and extra curricular areas.
  • Are applied with competence in a variety of contexts and cultures.
  • Can be self-assessed to develop strategies for monitoring and improving.

  We want our graduates to be complex thinkers who:

  • Make good decisions and solve problems in a timely manner based upon a mixture of analysis, experience, and judgment.
  • Make connections among ideas, information, and experience.
  • Generate creative ideas.

  We want our graduates to be effective communicators who:

  • Ask questions to gain information and to encourage participation
  • Invite and consider multiple perspectives other than ones’ own.
  • Express reasoned opinions supported by evidence.
  • Evaluate and use information to deepen understanding.
  • Adapt communication for different audiences and purposes.

  We want our graduates to be caring and understanding people who:

  • Create and sustain healthy relationships.
  • Value teamwork and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Develop personal strengths and potential; address weakness and limitations.
  • Value diversity.
  • Give service to others.

  We want our graduates to be responsible citizens who:

  • Embrace the multiple roles and responsibilities of community membership.
  • Debate central democratic issues and formulate informed opinions.
  • Understand their potential to impact their communities.
  • Understand the interdependence of all people and nations.

 We want our graduates to demonstrate personal wellness by being people who:

  • Make choices that reflect balanced priorities.
  • Maintain physical health through exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and sleep.
  • Develop emotional and mental health through a deeper understanding of self.

We want our graduates to care for the human spirit by being people who:

  • Appreciate beauty.
  • Respond to nature.
  • Embrace the arts.
  • Find joy and build optimism in life.
