EXPLORING ASSESSMENT

Introduction:

During the 1999-2000 school year, the DHS Learning Plan Committee helped to identify assessment as a main interest of the DHS faculty.  The Staff Development Committee joined with the building administrators to address this interest in assessment while piloting a new partnership in instructional leadership.  During second semester of the 1999-2000 year, this group experimented with strategies and discussed the best way to move forward with assessment on a building scale for the 2000-20001 school year.

Goals for combined Staff Development/Building Administrators’ Committee:

Description:

We began our year with two late start days on September 27 and 28.  The first day was divided into two parts.  First, we met in our departments and asked individuals to answer the following questions:

Part Two of our first day was an interdepartmental discussion of Guiding Principle #2, specifically Learner-centered Principle #14 (see home page).  Faculty appreciated the time to hear different perspectives of the different departments and anticipates future opportunities to meet interdepartmentally.

As the school year progresses, Learning Teams within departments may choose to investigate specific areas of interests such as portfolios, journals, etc.  Curricular groups may also form to examine how to enhance assessment practices within a specific course.

All groups are being encouraged to include an element of reflection in their work in order to monitor personal growth in their understanding of assessment.
